The Accidental 8 Mile Run

admin · January 14, 2011 · Leave a Comment

I had a vision of my trip to the gym yesterday. I was going to run for about 10 minutes to warmup, then lift weights. I decided to push the marathon training kickoff  to next week since I’m still feeling a little sick and going out of town this weekend. So, I jumped on the treadmill and set my Nike Plus for 10 minutes.

The entire 10 minutes, I was debating with myself whether or not I should just stick to the training as much as I can, instead of putting it off.  If that were the case, I would have been running 5 miles yesterday. So, the ten minutes came and went and I decided to keep running since I was feeling good.

Next thing I knew, 5 miles was rolling around. So I thought to myself, “well, I’m going out of town this weekend. So, my long run of 8 miles is probably not going to happen….so maybe I should get it out of way right now?”

So, there ya go. My ten minutes warm up turned into an 8 mile long run on the treadmill. I have a weird competitive streak-with myself. When I feel good, I challenge myself to keep going. I’m sure in a way this is good….but on the other hand, maybe increases my chances of getting hurt. Either way, I finished the 8 miles, pain free.  Here were my stats:

  • Distance: 8.01 miles
  • Time: 1 hour and 5 minutes
  • Pace: 8:07 min/sec
  • Calories: 692

Since I did go to the gym with the intention of lifting weights, maybe today I’ll complete the program I had lined up. Here’s proof I did not plan on running-I was wearing some serious wool socks:

After the run, I made some lunch which included a Banana Nut VitaTop topped with Justin’s Maple Almond Butter. I picked up a little trial packet at the store yesterday. I have to say it was pretty good, but I actually prefer the version I made a couple weeks ago!

I also had a Peach Chobani greek yogurt with some clementines mixed in. Never get sick of those clementines!

So, it was pretty good day. I made sure to stretch well after the run and foam roll big time. I should also start icing my knees just as a precaution.

Happy Friday everyone!
