I wanted to shake things up a bit in the morning. I love my usual oatmeal…but I know there are tons of grains/wheats out there that taste similar to oatmeal but are even more nutritious. Bulgar is one of those. Bulgar has quite a bit of fiber and protein so it’s a great oatmeal swap.

I found directions on how to cook bulgar in the microwave so I gave it a shot. I measured out 1/3 cup bulgar and 2/3 cup of milk.

The directions said to microwave it for about 6 minutes. I attempted to cook it 2 minutes at a time so it wouldn’t explode…
My “2 minute” strategy didn’t work..

I cleaned up the microwave and attempted to clean around the bowl. I cooked it for a couple more minutes then it was ready to eat! Unfortunately, it looked very sad and disgusting..
Besides being totally unappealing…it didn’t look like very much food. So, I decided to warm up some oatmeal and add the bulgar to the oats.
The bulgar has a bit of a crunchy texture…it almost reminds me of wheatberries. I like the texture and thought it tasted good with the oats.
I added some pumpkin butter, peanut butter, half a banana, and shredded coconut to the mix.

Breakfast tasted pretty good. But I’ll try the bulgar by itself again…maybe find other directions. Any recommendations out there on how to cook it?
