I tried. I tried so hard to eat healthy and exercise while I was out of town. I’m pretty sure I failed miserably. I did exercise a total of 3 times so that’s better than none. On the diet front, any “diet” I was practicing pretty much flew out the window. Turns out it’s really hard to say no to dessert (yes, even at lunch) and meals you know are horrible for you, at least for me it is!
Since I’m back in the Cleve, I’m back to my day to day routines which does include working out and eating right (believe it or not). Why is it so much easier to stick to a healthy lifestyle when you’re at home?
I’m sort of glad we’re staying in town for the next few months. That means I can really concentrate on staying healthy, especially eating right. I feel like I have a million excuses when I go out of town, here I officially have none!
The hubs and I hit the gym yesterday (he did not go once while I was gone. Yeah, that’s right, I’m calling him out!). Neither one of us were very motivated. It’s definitely true that working out earlier in the day is much easier than going later. But, we managed to motivate each other and get our buns over there! Here’s the routine we did:
2 Rounds of Circuit Training- I used the workout generator to make this routine. It’s actually a combination of “hard” and “medium.”
- Side Lunges- 15 reps on both legs holding 12lb. weights. I hate side lunges…I’m just gonna come out and say it. They’re really difficult for me and I’m always sore the next day. I do like being sore, so at least I know I’m working those muscles hard!
- 21’s– Used 12lb. weights. This was tough using the 12lb. weights but I’m glad I pushed it up a notch.
- Pullups– As many as possible! I think I did 5 or 6 each time with my husband’s help. I am officially frustrated with the pullup. They are so hard! When will I be able to do 1 by myself? Just one…that’s all I want!
- Cardio– Lunge Jumps for 30 seconds. These are becoming easier so I think I’ll start pushing them up to either 45 seconds or 1 minute! You can also hold weights when doing these like 3-5lb. weights. The first time I did these I totally underestimated how hard they were and I held 5lb. weights. After a few jumps, I realized how ridiculously challenging they are and eliminated the weights!
- Back Extensions– 15 reps. I love back extensions. I just love the feeling in your back and hamstrings. It’s not so hard that it makes you miserable, it’s more of a “good burn” feeling..if there is such thing!
- Arnold Press– 15 reps using 15 and 12lb. weights. I tried to do as many as I could with the 15lb. weights, then dropped down if I needed to.
- Sumo Squat– 15 reps holding 2 12lb. weights in between my legs as I squatted down.
- Cardio– 1 50 meter sprint with 1 50 meter high knee run.
- Weighted Crunch-15 reps holding 12lb. weight. These are basically normal crunches except you’re holding a weight in your hands so it’s more challenging. I actually bring my feet up in the air too to add another layer of difficulty, but you can definitely keep them on the floor.
- Plank– 45 seconds.
- Ankle Taps– 15 reps on both sides. Laying on the ground with your feet bent, you crunch up slightly then tilt your body to the right (arms straight) and try to touch the inside of your right ankle with your right hand. Then crunch and tilt to the other side trying to touch your left ankle. You’ll feel these in your obliques big time!
- Cardio– Burpees for 30 seconds. I did burpees with pushups just because we didn’t work our chests at all.
I’ve been lacking a bit lately in the cardio department. I get some cardio through these circuits that I do, but I haven’t focused primarily on cardio in quite a while. I think it’s because I have flashbacks of marathon training which sounds just about awful right now. But now that I’m back on the healthy train, I’m going to try and focus a couple days a week on cardio.
I started today with a 30 minute run on the treadmill. Only 30 minutes…but I swear it felt like an hour! I don’t know if it was the treadmill or the running (or both) but man it’s like it would never end! I have no idea how I got through 26 miles of running…3 was plenty!
But I did it, so I’m happy. I know that cardio is an important part of exercise training, but I’ve been so unmotivated to do it. Since it’s pretty toasty outside, I’ll probably rely on the treadmill. I think one way to get over the dullness of treadmill running is incorporating hills or speed work into your cardio session.
For example, I’ve done a 20 minute run before where every minute you add more incline until you reach 10 minutes, then start declining until you’re at 20. You could do the same thing with speed. Or you could run 10 minutes, use the elliptical for 10 minutes, then bike for 10 minutes just to split it up. So I’ll think I’ll try that approach so I don’t get too bored.
How do you spice up your cardio workouts?

I know what you mean about just staying in town – and not having any special events coming up, especially. Last week was my birthday plus 4th of July so there were extra treats and goodies that I try not to eat on a daily/weekly basis. Suffice to say I ate pretty crappy.
Way to spice up my cardio workouts? I listen to music. Usually, I don’t listen to music during training runs, only when I am running a race. But, running seems to feel like work lately (maybe because I’m trying to up my weekly mileage) that I need a distraction. Music it is!

Woohoo! Feels so good right?!

It has been so hot here too — I’ve been either getting up super early to run or I hit the treadmill. Either way I am miserable and pray for better (cooler!) weather

I have to do speed or incline intervals on the treadmill or I get SO bored! My favorite is HIIT – 20 sec at 9.0-9.5 and then 40 at 5.5-6, or 5-4-3-2-1 … 5@ 6.0, 4@6.5, 3 @7.0, 2@7.5, 1@8.0 and go through that 3-4 times!
