12 Days of (Healthy) Christmas, Day 11

admin · December 15, 2011 · 5 Comments

1 day closer to Christmas!

Piper's Piping!

On the 11th day of Christmas you gave to yourself…..Self Control at Holiday Parties! Or 11 cocktails at a party! Just kidding, don’t drink 11 drinks…but if you do, invite me because your party sounds awesome.

Anyway, we’ve kind of gone over surviving a holiday party in the past but there are a few other things I wanted to bring up.

According to me, a professional party goer, when I walk into a party, I tend to gravitate towards the food and drinks first. I think this is because there are always some pre-party jitters and for some reason, it’s comforting to have something in your hands or mouth (that’s what she said).  It’s kind of like when you’re sitting alone in public and bust out your phone, it’s something that makes you look busy (and important…which obviously we all are).

For me, if I walk into a party and don’t know a lot of people, keeping myself busy with food and drinks seems to ease some anxiety. Does this happen to anyone else? If not, maybe I need to go talk to someone…or make friends.

Think about it the next time you walk into a party….do you go straight over to the food? Try to stop yourself and chat with fellow party goers instead. I honestly think this would be a difficult thing to do.

In my professional opinion (as a party goer), having a drink is always a good idea. I know alcohol is bad, you booze you lose, etc., but seriously….it does help you feel a little loosened up. So, a drink is harmless. Just grab your drink and walk away from the bar-go mingle!

Speaking of drinks, ever wonder what your healthiest choices are? Here’s a mini-breakdown for you:

  • Vodka Soda– 95 calories in 1.5 oz.
  • Champagne– 120 calories in 5 oz.
  • White Wine– 120 calories in 5 oz.
  • Red Wine- 120 calories in 5 oz.
  • Skinnygirl White Cranberry Cosmo– 125 calories in 5 oz.
  • Beer– 150 calories in 12 oz.
  • Hot Cocoa– 176 calories in 8 oz.
  • Eggnog– 340 calories in 8 oz.

So, the next time you’re at a party just ask for 5 oz. of vodka soda. I’m kidding. I have no idea what 5 oz. of anything looks like so I’ll take whatever they give me (usually the more the merrier). I think in general, the darker your beverage, the worse off. Except of course in the case of  a White Russian or Eggnog.  Creamier does not equal healthier. Unless you’re The Dude, then you can whatever you want.

So, that’s my challenge to myself: try to stay away from the food at parties for at least 20 minutes after I walk in so I eliminate mindless eating. I’ll test it out this weekend…

Do you gravitate towards food and drinks when you get to a party? Say yes so I’m not the only one :).

Such a good post!! I usually always grab a drink right away and have been working really hard to step away from the food table at parties to avoid the party being about the food vs it being about the experience of being there with friends, family, etc. It’s hard to break that habit but it CAN be done. The glass of wine, though? Firmly planted in hand. Ha! 🙂

So what if my glass of wine is filled about 3 times? Does that count as having self control? lol

    Great post!
