This could potentially sound really disgusting to a number of you. The first time I tried it, I was kinda freaked out. If I ran into a huge piece of spinach while slurping down my smoothie, it would be over between us. Spinach would go back to strictly being in salads.
But honestly, so far, I have yet to encounter major spinach taste in a smoothie. I think spinach compared to fruit just doesn’t stand a chance. The fruity taste always overpowers it (which is obviously a good thing).
I like the green color the spinach produces though. I just feel like my smoothie looks so healthy since they’re green. Unfortunately, I usually get a muddy color, I’ve only attained green status like, twice. Muddy just looks gross…but I swear it tastes good!
This particular smoothie consisted of spinach, frozen strawberries, chocolate protein powder, milk, and water.
Can you tell I shop at Costco? Check out the 6lb. bag of strawberries. I was actually at Costco the other day and thinking how creative I’d be if I bought a bag of salt, a 25lb. bag, and used it to work out with. Then I picked it up and salt came out the top so I think swinging it around my house during a workout would be kind of a problem. At least our floor wouldn’t freeze.
Anyway, I stuff my blender halfway with spinach and then fill it up halfway with milk. I rip the stems off my spinach too just because they annoy me. I do that whenever I use spinach: salads, soups, etc. Stupid stems.
Then, I blend the spinach and milk mix. I do this just to make sure the spinach is blended up well. My blender (or whatever it is…bullet?) doesn’t blend perfectly so I just want to ensure I won’t have spinach chunks stuck in my teeth.
That’s the green color I’m lookin’ for! The strawberries ruin it…
Anyway, then I add the strawberries, protein powder, and water and blend again.
Every combination I’ve tried so far, spinach and banana, spinach and strawberries, blueberries, etc., I haven’t tasted spinach. It tastes like a normal fruit smoothie.
I’m trying to incorporate more veggies into my diet so even though this isn’t very much, I’ll take all I can get. I need that Sneaky Chef book. Apparently I’m a child and need to trick myself into eating veggies.
Have you tried spinach in smoothies? Any other vegetables? I haven’t been brave enough to try others….

I do this for breakfast almost every morning and I love it! It’s such a great way to get in a serving of greens, and fruit, packed with protein! I use unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk in mine because sometimes having a ton of dairy first thing bugs my stomach – it gives it even more flavor though!

I am a super-taster so I always still taste the spinach. I am trying to figure out a fruit combination that will successfully mask the spinachy flavor, but no luck so far! I just love the thought of getting veggies in at breakfast!

Have you tried using lemon juice to neutralize the spinach flavor? Citric a it does a good job of toning down the oxalic acid taste in the spinach
