Overnighting the Oats

admin · March 3, 2011 · 3 Comments

One thing not included in our new place is a microwave. I noticed most Dallas apartments don’t have washers and dryers, you usually rent or buy your own. That’s a first for me. In this case, we do have the washer/dryer (which is great) but no microwave. Luckily, we have like, a billion dollars to Macy’s (from the wedding) so hopefully we can pick up a microwave from there.

Since we don’t have a microwave, I decided to try overnight oats. Overnight oats are basically soaking your oats in the fridge with whatever liquid you’d like. I used whole oats and soaked them in fat free milk and a little chocolate soy milk (sugar free).

I wasn’t really sure what to think of this. I’ve seen it a lot on other people’s blogs so I know people like it. There’s just something about warm oatmeal that I love!

This morning, I added some peanut butter and a Vitatop to the oatmeal mix.

Usually, the peanut butter melts so nicely; it’s so good when it’s warm! I have to say, it did mix well this morning.

love me some peanut butter

I toasted a CranBran Vitatop and crumbled it on top. I’ve never toasted Vitatops before (usually microwave). It turned out a little cold in the middle but my oatmeal was cold so no worries!

I actually thought this turned out pretty good! I think soaking the oats overnight softens them up a bit almost like they’re cooked. I might try this again tonight and maybe add some more ingredients to soak overnight.

Have you tried overnight oats? Any good mix-in ideas?  I’m sort of lacking on ingredients since we’ve been moving and we’re leaving town, so I don’t really want to hit the grocery store. But I have a couple things laying around.

I haven’t worked out in the past few days since we’ve been moving. I was supposed to run 7 miles yesterday and 4 the day before but that didn’t happen (oops). At least I’ve been getting some sort of workout moving boxes up and down stairs!

Hopefully, tomorrow I can get a run in before sitting on a plane for basically a whole day. I’m hoping I don’t lose my running stamina if I take a break (like an 11 day break). I’ll try to run in Thailand, but it won’t be a priority-exploring will be!

Happy Thursday all! It’s almost Friday! 🙂
